The Tithe and Stewardship: A Biblical Reflection for Our Lives
"Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver." – 2 Corinthians 9:7 (KJV)
Introduction
The topic of tithing and stewardship goes to the very heart of our relationship with God. For many Christians, this area reveals whether their lives are led by the Holy Spirit or driven by selfish motives. Salvation, however, is a free gift from God. We can do nothing to earn or maintain it—praise God for that!
As born-again believers, we are adopted into God's family. Just as children have responsibilities in a home, so we, as members of God's household, have responsibilities as His stewards. This post explores key principles of stewardship and how to apply them to specific areas of our lives.
Principles of Stewardship
1. Everything Belongs to God
Psalm 24:1 reminds us, "The earth is the LORD'S, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein." Everything we have comes from Him.
2. Stewardship Is the Management of Another’s Property
The story of Joseph in Genesis 39:1-6 demonstrates that all we manage ultimately belongs to God. Joseph was made a steward, managing his master’s resources faithfully, bringing blessing to his master.
3. Every Christian Is a Steward
In Matthew 25:14-15, Jesus tells the parable of the talents, illustrating that every believer is entrusted with resources and abilities to manage according to their capacity.
4. Stewards Must Be Faithful
1 Corinthians 4:2 declares, "Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful." Our role as stewards is to handle what God has entrusted to us with diligence and faithfulness.
Areas of Stewardship
Stewardship extends beyond finances—it encompasses our time, talents, and treasures. Let’s explore these areas:
A. Time
Ephesians 5:16 exhorts us to redeem the time "because the days are evil." Life is fleeting, like a vapor that appears for a moment and vanishes (James 4:14). Every moment should be lived for God's glory.
B. Talents
The parable of the talents (Matthew 25:14-30) teaches that God has given each of us unique abilities. Not everyone receives the same amount, but we are each accountable to use what we have for His purposes.
C. Treasure
Our financial resources also come from God. Deuteronomy 8:18 reminds us, "But thou shalt remember the LORD thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth." Tithing and offerings are vital aspects of our financial stewardship.
The Tithe: A Biblical Principle
Tithing, or giving 10% of our income, is a biblical principle that transcends the Old Testament Law. From Abraham (Genesis 14:20) to Jesus (Matthew 23:23) to the Apostle Paul (1 Corinthians 16:2), the practice of tithing honors God.
Why Should We Tithe?
Because it belongs to God. Leviticus 27:30 states, "And all the tithe of the land... is the LORD'S: it is holy unto the LORD."
Because it is an act of obedience and love. Under the Law, failing to tithe was considered robbing God (Malachi 3:8). Faithful tithing brings blessings that overflow (Malachi 3:10).
Where Should We Tithe?
Our tithe belongs to our local church. In 1 Corinthians 16:2, Paul instructs believers to set aside their offerings on the first day of the week for the work of the church. This ensures that there is "meat in mine house" (Malachi 3:10), supporting the ministry and its needs.
Offerings: Beyond the Tithe
While the tithe is a responsibility, offerings reflect a heart of generosity. The Bible describes offerings as "freewill offerings" (Ezra 1:4). Giving an offering is not a matter of obligation but a response of gratitude to God.
How Should We Give?
2 Corinthians 9:7 teaches, "Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver." When we give, we can trust God to supply all our needs (2 Corinthians 9:8).
Conclusion
Stewardship is about more than money—it reflects our faith, love, and gratitude toward God. Everything we are and have belongs to Him, and our task is to manage His blessings with faithfulness.
As Christians, we are called to tithe and also to give generously. By doing so, we acknowledge God's provision and glorify Him in our lives. Let us live as faithful stewards, honoring our Lord with our time, talents, and treasures. To Him be all the glory!
